Your First P/E Calculation: TSLA Step by Step

What You’ll Learn

How to calculate the P/E ratio of a US stock from scratch.

Content

Let’s run a practical calculation. We’ll compute P/E for TSLA. After this, you can do it yourself for any other stock.

Step 1: Get the stock price. Yahoo Finance, Robinhood, or your broker app. TSLA today (example): $240. Fluctuates intraday.

Step 2: Find EPS (Earnings Per Share). Yahoo Finance “Statistics” tab. Or 10-K report (via broker). TSLA last year EPS (example): $4.

Step 3: Calculate P/E. P/E = Price / EPS = 240 / 4 = 60. TSLA P/E = 60. “Investors pay $60 for each $1 of earnings.”

Step 4: Compare to sector. Auto sector average P/E: 8-15 (cyclical). Tech sector average: 25-35. TSLA = auto + tech hybrid. P/E 60 = high growth expectation built in.

Step 5: Compare to history. TSLA’s 5-year P/E range: 30-200 (volatile). Current 60 = mid-low. Historically much higher; relatively reasonable now.

Trailing vs Forward P/E:

  • Trailing: based on trailing 12-month EPS. Past-looking.
  • Forward: based on next year’s expected EPS. Analyst consensus. TSLA forward P/E (example): 35 (growth assumed).

Common mistakes:

  1. Treating a single year’s P/E as absolute (cyclical companies trick you).
  2. Ignoring that EPS can be negative (P/E meaningless in loss years).
  3. Skipping sector comparison.
