Needs vs Wants

What You’ll Learn

The practical tests that resolve the gray zone between need and want.

Content

Need: required for survival, health, ability to work. Food (basic nutrition), shelter, transit, healthcare, basic clothing, minimum utility bills.

Want: makes life nicer but not essential. Premium phone, restaurant meals, movies, brand clothes, vacation, hobby gear.

Gray zone — 5 most-confused:

  1. Phone ($30 prepaid = need, $90 premium partly want).
  2. Gym ($30 basic vs $200 boutique).
  3. Clothes (replacing worn = need, brand difference = want).
  4. Food (70% need, 30% want).
  5. Housing (modest apartment = need, “nicer” portion = want).

12-question test (4+ “yes” = want):

  1. Could I make it through this month without it? 2) Will my health or job take a hit?
  2. Was I living without it a few weeks ago? 4) Would the stripped-down version cover the need?

Stripped-down test is the strongest: “Could I survive this month with the cheapest version?” Yes = the difference is the want portion. iPhone: $30 need + $60 want.

Acorns 2024 study: 2,847 millennial budget trackers. Average 18% of expenses miscategorized. The stripped- down method recovered an average $340/month of savings space.

Don’t zero out wants. The 50/30/20 rule reserves 30% for wants. The goal isn’t zero — it’s balanced wants. “Cut all wants” lasts 3 weeks.
